Step into the gritty world of gunsmoke and the Wild West, in Blood on the Cards, where young Samuel Elliott Spencer transforms from a green ranch hand to a cunning survivor. When Sam’s mentor, Burt Westcott, is brutally gunned down, the teenager is thrust into a blood feud that tests his mettle at every turn.
Caught between seasoned outlaws and the unforgiving rules of frontier justice, Sam quickly learns that survival requires more than bravery—it demands sharp wit and a gambler’s nerve. With a throwing knife in one hand and a gun in the other, he faces life-or-death decisions that push him to the brink.
Rex Canyon delivers a fast-paced tale where danger is constant and justice is usually lethal. Packed with action, shrewd strategy, and a touch of dark humor, Blood on the Cards will keep fans of Westerns hooked from the first shot to the last gamble.
Rex Canyon is a seasoned journalist with a career spanning decades in the fast-paced world of newspapers. A lifelong lover of the myths and legends of the Old West, Rex always has been captivated by tales of rugged landscapes, larger-than-life characters, and a time when men settled their own affairs.
Rex draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of John Ford’s classic Westerns, particularly those set against the dramatic backdrop of Monument Valley. These cinematic masterpieces sparked a fascination with the untamed spirit of the frontier, fueling passion for storytelling steeped in grit, danger and retribution.
In a lawless land, survival means delivering justice on your terms. Sam Elliott Spencer learns that the only steadfast rule in the Wild West is to strike before being struck.

The flashing scenes and build-up in each fight felt like I was watching a Clint Eastwood movie. There was always someone out to get him; with little rest and plenty of trouble, Samuel Elliott Spencer’s life was vibrant and full of adventure.
Spencer had a strange moral code— suited to the rough environment of that time. He minded his own business, didn’t shirk in his trade, and always knew how to bounce back because he was good at what he did.
Rex Canyon did an excellent job of explaining gambling. I enjoyed the subtle mind games between the gamblers. It was exciting to read how each gambler navigated their way to make a living. It was a fresh perspective for me. I think Blood on the Cards would suit readers with a passion for Western fiction.
Author Rex Canyon writes about the American Old West in a way that feels completely real and true to history. I was amazed by how he made everything feel dangerous and how you could hear the wooden floors creak and smell the whiskey in the saloons.
Samuel Elliott Spencer is a fascinating main character who becomes more determined and clever because of his missing fingers, not weaker.
The story moves at a perfect pace, mixing personal fights for revenge with bigger ideas about justice and second chances. Canyon includes small historical details that make you feel like you’re there, experiencing all the sights and sounds of the Old West.
Blood on the Cards by Rex Canyon is Western fiction at its best. Right from the start, you are drawn into the high-stakes story of a gambler who is constantly fighting for survival. With plenty of action and compelling dialog, this story is one of the most engaging Westerns I’ve ever read.
There is some violence, although nothing that doesn’t fit the genre. The story is written in a way that lets you experience life in those times, with realistic, well-developed characters that you’ll like right from the start.
There is plenty of tension as the narrative wends its way to a life-or-death finale that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Although this isn’t a fastpaced story, it does allow you to grow with it and become completely invested in the plot, and you’ll struggle to put it down. I could see this being made into a TV movie. I highly recommend this to all fans of Westerns and even those who just want a thrilling tale to while away a few hours.
